Short term and Medium term options

For parents, it is advisable that you can give them good shoes that are stable at the heel cup, stable in the midsection and protect them from the modern world. Let them run around barefoot on natural surfaces as this helps them develop a sense of balance.

A pair of pre-made orthotics can be sufficient to support the feet and make them function better. Pre-made orthotics can improve coordination, stability, ungainly running and general clumsiness. This less expensive option allows for replacement pairs as the child’s feet grow.

On the other hand, if their feet are outside the ideal ranges of “flat feet” or pronation, it is advisable to see a podiatrist experienced in orthotics. Children with specific disorders of conditions of their feet may need custom-made kids orthotics.

It is beneficial to know that flat feet are a perfectly normal stage of development, and orthotic supports will not permanently alter the arch height as what is genetically programmed to occur win in the end. Nevertheless, premade orthotics will help improve function, coordination, stability, clumsiness, etc.
Children with growing feet should only be fitted with custom-made orthotics in exceptional circumstances such as when diagnosed with conditions, pain, development disorders, and so on. Children’s feet usually stop growing at the age of 13 for girls and 16 for boys. By then, if conditions persist, then a custom made orthotics may be recommended.

Orthotics are arch supports that go into shoes to help hold up the arches of the feet. Orthotics can be pre-made or custom-made. For young children, it is normal to have low arches and may begin to develop from four years of age and should be formed by the age of six. Most children will eventually develop a normal arch. However, for some children, they may develop permanent flexible flat foot. It is also important to differentiate flexible flat foot from other more serious problems (e.g., bony deformity, rigid flat foot).

Flexible flatfoot, where the arch disappears when standing but reappears when sitting, is usually outgrown as the arch shapes itself. However, rigid flatfoot can present as pain and cramping, heels that tilt outward, and pain when walking.
